okay, so if i upgrade to an 8.8" rearend, what will i need? is it just the gears and the housing or will i need a new rear axel? let me know if youve done this switch before and how to go about getting it done. thanks!

I'm not completely sure, but I believe you need the whole assembly. Axel, rear, gears, everything. www.newtakeoff.com
