Default Restrictive Muffler?

I keep hearing about how "restrictive" the V6 Stang Muffler is. What makes it restrictive?

i dont know the exact flow pattern of the muffler, but if you can, drive one mustangwith the stock muffler and then one with after market hi-flo muffler or a dual exhaust and you'll see the difference. you'll def. feel it accelerating and at the high end of the RPM range.

plus. stock has to be restrictive somehow. otherwise, how could there be any aftermarket companies if stocks the best you can get?

Yeah, the V6's are designed to be daily drivers (not really aimed at hardcore car enthusiasts), so the muffler is mainly designed to be quiet, I think. It still puts out okay, and doesn't hinder the car too seriously, but it definitely holds back some flow, and basically any aftermarket muffler you buy will let your car breathe a little better (and will definitely sound better!)

The "restrictiveness" just has to do with the number/design of the walls and any insulation inside the muffler. That's why a straight-pipe is the least restrictive, because there's nothing to get in the way of the exhaust as it makes its way out of the car.

stock mufflers are more restrictive becuase they are much more narrow on the inside then an aftermarket axleback. not to mention the air doesnt flow straight out of the stock one

OK what is a good aftermarket muffler for the V6 that will free up some horses and not be TOO loud or break the bank?

Check out the Flowmaster American Thunders, and the JBAs. Both of them will cost about $150, and they both in the "Mild" volume level

If you want to save some $ and still have mufflers with a nice sound, check out GT Takeoffs. A lot of guys on this forum will sell them to you for around $80.00 or less.
