How do you keep the engine clean?
Hi fellas, I really want to keep my engine clean, both inside and out.
I plan on Seafoaming at about 20K, however I'm curious as to how to keep the outside/aesthetics of the engine pristine every 10,000 miles or so.
I've never kept the outside of the engine clean in any of my cars, 'cause frankly, I don't know how. There is pleny of electronics and mechanics going on in there, and I don't want to screw up any of the intakes/electronics/plugs etc, inside of the engine.
Is it safe to shoot the engine with high powered steam spray, or better to spend the money and have it professionally steam cleaned?Cost for pro steam cleaning? Any information on this subject would be greatly appreciated.

I spray it with highpressure hose (from a safe distance obviously, dont wanna rip up any wires) then clean it with a rag and water by hand.
Im intrested too in seafoaming soon, any tips from fellow mustang owners?

On the SPEED channel there is a show that's been around forever called MotorWeek. On that show there is a segment called Goss' Garage. Pat Goss is the host and he did an episode on exactly this topic. Pulling from memory he did just what 06musgt said which is using plastic grocery bags to cover the fuse box, battery, distributor and...(I'm not sure what else if anything else because again this is from memory) but then sprayed on an engine degreaser/cleaner and rinsed it off. The point I took away from that show was that you have to be very careful not to get water in any of the electrical components otherwise you can screw up the sensors and you'll have all kinds of problems. So just double bag those areas and have at it and you should be fine.
If they play reruns you may want to try and catch it, set your DVR to record the show and maybe you'll get lucky. The episode I saw was only about a month or two ago.

I've always felt that to keep the engine clean was easier than trying to get the engine clean. I clean mine quite often. I use a power washer with soap first then the rinse. I've never had a problem of any kind.
