Default Fail Safe Mode

My wife drives a 2005 Mustang Vert and had the fail safe mode light illuminate (don't know about the check engine light). She said the car felt underpowered (limp mode). The car has had no modifications.

Have not seen dealer repair parts list yet but I believe they replaced a throttle body component - possibly the sensor or the entire throttle body unit (the part with labor was $750). The car is two years old and has - yep, you guessed it - 38,000 miles on it. The dealer, who've I've not spoken with yet, says the repair is not under warranty. I think it is (engine/power train or emmissions components) and want to go in armed with the facts.

Any help? Thanks.

2007 and up Ford's have 50,000 mile powertrain warranty......if the car went into limp mode my guess as a mechanic is that it HAD to be due to a powertrain part. Unless it was just a sensor then it wouldnt be covered because even if that sensor is on the powertrain its under electrical. It wouldnt have been the idle air control by any chance would it?

Don't know yet ..... I'm about to call the dealer and ask for a break down of the repair bill. I'll post back up when I've got some details.

yeah that is not covered under the powertrain warranty. However, since you are only 2k out of warranty you need to talk to the service department about not paying, especially if you bought the car there. If that doesn't work, call ford customer service and keep bitching until you get a response. Tell them you traded in a toyota or something and with this kind of service you'll be going back to a foreign manufacturer. Surely they can work something out.

best of luck.

Thanks, Laser..... I've already contacted Ford Customer Service, they contacted the dealer who said it is accurate that the part in question is not covered under the bumber to bumber 24/36 warranty for a 2005 .... but, "they'll adjust" the repair bill since, I am a loyal Ford Customer." I'll post up when I negotiate a deal ....my starting postion is that I want Ford to pay for both the part and the labor to install it and I'll wait to hear their answer. Should be interesting.

World Ford in Stone Mountain, GAbought the part (actually Ford bought it) and I paid part of the labor .... 179.00. The car actually had 39,720 miles on it - nearly 4000 miles out of warranty and they still covered most of it. Not bad! I 'm a happy customer.

I contacted Ford Customer Service BEFORE I went to the dealer (they had already told my wife on the phone that it wasn't covered) , provided the circumstances and the part number. After 10 minuts on hold the rep told me he had talked to the service manager and they would be happy to adjust the charges.

I'll buy another Ford. The Big Three - at least Ford - are finally getting it. I also own a 2007 Corvette and have been very impressed with the dealer service I have received and I won't let anyone but a specific guy atthis service department touch it.

But American! Whatever that means these days.

Hey I'm glad it worked out for you, and yes Ford's service has improved significantly. Especially if you are willing to call and let them know you are unhappy and they can do something to fix it. Enjoy the Mustang and the Vette.

Oh and hell yeah Buy American.

Um ... I thought only the GT had fail-safe mode, where the engine "limps home" on 4-cylinders ... and no equivalent on the V6 - or am I missing something?
