Is this right??
Hi
I just got my 2007 V6 Premium Convertible with 8K miles on her!
I was looking under her today and saw this rear axle.
Is this right? Should any 6 month old car have this much rust on the axle?
Nothing else shows signs of rust. Should I worry?
Thanks

Absolutely normal, will not hurt anything, actually is expected by ford. Some members will paint to prevent it, some will go with aftermarket (zeibart) type coating. It is similar to installing new rotors, the first week they look great, the second week the surface rust forms on the hats, it really is normal.....
I bought my '05 brand new off the lot. It already had a light coat of rust on the axle. Looks bad, but 100% normal for these cars.
I sort of wonder 25 years from now, what the concours correct finish on that axle will be considered to be. Whether they'll be grading the rust for the proper eveness and patina, etc

They do it on purpose, I cannot think of what the process is called, but my wife works for TxDOT and they do the same process on the overpass beams. By actuallly promoting the metal to slightly rust on the surface, it actually creates a barrier that prevents deeper rust from penetrating the metal.
the axle is specifically designed to rust so that it adds color contrast to the underbelly of the stang to complete the retro styling that is already present on the exterior......
