Default Auto vs manual

Hi fellow Stangers!

I am planning on putting a gt muffler on my v6, I have read that the the gt muffler from a manual transmission sounds louder and deeper than the one for the auto, I was wondering if there is big difference between the two. Also, since my Mustang is a autoI was wondering it matters if I puteither the auto or the manualgt muffler on, I figurethere should not be a problem but I would like to double check to make sure.

Thank you !

I've never heard nor read that there are any differences in the mufflers for an auto vs a manual. I wouldn't begin to understand how the transmission affects the exhaust note. You might want to double check where you read that and question the sources.

there IS a difference. and you are correct with your assumption. make sure the GT take-off you get is off of a manual. there were threads about this along with pics for comparisons. i dont remember the exact product numbers on the muffs but they were different.

A few guys at the last Mustang cruise I was at were talking about this...to the naked ear we could hear zero difference. We checked out about 6-7 different GTs with stock exhaust.

They are different and the manual supposedly sounds a little louder and deeper but I didnt notice that when comparing my stock exhaust to a buddies auto.

The GT mufflers from a 5spd car have a different part number than mufflers from a GT with an auto tranny. To the OP, you won't hear much of a difference (if any) between the two types, and it doesn't matterwhat type of transmission you have. I have a single GT take-off muffler on my wife's 4.0L/auto vert, and two take-off mufflers with x-pipe on my coupe (4.0L/5spd). All three mufflers were off auto cars. Both 4.0L's sound great (no clips though)

i guess it makes sense why they are different. autos are generally tuned to be more conservative and manny's are tuned to be a bit more aggressive.

Exactly, Just put a GT manual on myself. Love the tone. A manual is more free flowing. I've included pics from both an auto and manual GT muffler looking into the tailpipe.

Part numbers are as follows:

GT M/T Muff FI-7849-R
auto is F1-7991-l

Pictures aren't embedding for some reasaon. Check my photo gallery for the two pics. Click the camera icon to the left.
