Default engine clatter

I have a stock V6. It makes some irregular clattering noises after the engine warms up and is sitting at idle. I think it probably makes the noise all of the time, but you can only hear it when the engine is at low rpm. It has always made this noise and I have just accepted it as normal. However, I have just been wondering lately if this is the case. Do your cars make this noise also? Is it normal, or is there something wrong with a pulley or belt tensioner?

Thanks!

Our 4.0 engine is very noisey, Motor Trend mag. loves to pick on it.

Wished we had the 3.7 like the Lincoln and new 2011 V6. The GT boys are worried about the new 5.0, they should be concerned about the new 2011 V6 too! I'm sure in 2011 nothing will change as far as the V6 bashing. We are all part ot the Mustang family and our older brothers do like to pick on our lower hp......be it 4.6 Vs 4.0 or in 2011, 5.0 Vs 3.7.

Yes, sort of. It's not really a steady rhythm. It's kind of irregular. Does your not do it after the engine is at operating temperature?

Yeah, I have a good friend with one of the newer T-birds. Has the 3.9 Lincoln and it is really nice. Thanks for the info, that makes me feel better!

Try a thicker grade of oil, see if that makes any difference. Otherwise then you may have to hunt around for that ticking noise. Use a mechanics stethoscope.

There's a TSB for noisey injectors (clickety-clack) applicable to the GT's but I can't recall if it also applies to the 4.0

I don't think so. It seems to be more external. It also makes the noise even after a long drive.

I'll check that out. Would that noise be a rhythmic one, like a clock or a metronome? Or would it be more erratic?
