Default 4.0L Reliability

Im thinking of getting an '05-'09 Mustang V6 4.0L. Im just wondering if i buy one with say, between 60,000-80,000 miles on it would it be able to handle any performance boosts such as a supercharger? Also how reliable are they? I had a '98 Explorer with the 4.0L OHV in it and didn't have any mechanical problems with it, just wondering if it's the same for this SOHC 4.0?

I have 163,000 miles on the odometer right now on mine. I put the Xcharger on the car at 90,000 miles, and that was after two season on nitrous. The water pump is going out now after all this time so will need to be replaced but other than that no problems

I'd say it is a pretty reliable engine - even with performance additions.

There are people like JimC out there that have gotten great use out of their 4.0s. There are also plenty of people who had their 4.0s crap out on them early. I would think it comes down to how you treat the car.

My car runs like a champ. It still has fairly low miles 64,500, the only think I have to get looked at soon is the transmission. The T5 is a POS, other than that its a great car.

I'm coming from a '96 Eclipse with 300,000 miles on it though so anything is an improvement. Lol

The 4.0 has been a great car for me. Just installed an X-Charger supercharger at 18,000 miles and have had no issues. Of course, I'm not as far down the road as JimC, but the 4.0 is awesome.

My only caution, and this is a personal taste of mine, is I'd NEVER buy a used mustang that's been modded in the past. I had a bitch of a time with the dual exhaust I installed, and took the time to iron out the issue and resolve it. However, I've seen numerous forum members say they've done mods, had serious problems, then sold the car and said "Oh well, not my problem anymore. Let someone else deal with it."

So, if you're buying a used mustang, I'd recommend you purchase one that has no performance mods made to it. And if you do, test drive the hell out of it to make sure it's running just fine.

That's what Im trying to find. I find a lot of autos but most of the manuals are higher priced since their usually newer. I guess a lot of people hang on to their V6 T5 since its probably a lot of fun to drive lol

I have 130,000 miles on my 4.0. It has had an X-Charger supercharger on it since 30,000 miles and I pound the crap out of it. No issues so far. I do change the oil every 5000 miles and use Amsoil 100% synthetic oil.
