First, I HATE large wheels on these S197's; makes 'em look like clown cars but that's just me.
Second, 20's are heavy and, especially on a V6, will rob you of the little power that the 4.0L makes. But if "the look" is more important than performance, then go for it. And with 20's, you need to go with a lower profile tire to maintain an equivalent tire O.D. with the factory sizing which means less sidewall and a poor ride.
As long as you're not lowered, you can fit up to and beyond 305's on the rear but again, more weight = poor performance. Up front I wouldn't go wider than 255's so either the 8" or 9" should work. In back, 275's may fit the 9" and looks great with the 255 up front. But still, I think 20's on the S197 looks clownish but that's me...

20's look clownish? LOL. I think that depends on the wheel (just like some 18's can look like spares.....see what I did there?). However, there is definitely some merit to the rotational mass argument but to your average street driver the difference is going to be negligible.

If done right, 19's and 20's can look good on the S197 but very few have successfully pulled it off to suit MY taste. I know others like it but after moving from western Mississippi where many a clown car resides, I shudder when I see 20's on our beloved Stangs.

When I purchased my mustang used, it came with 20" Cobra R wheels. Honestly, I would prefer more meat on my wheels. The ride is a bit rough, especially when I lowered the car, which is a must with 20" wheels. I would suggest going with 18's. Also, the prices of tires for an 18" wheel will be less expensive and more choices. Just my 2 cents.
