Default Is it necessary?

I am about to install my AEM intake and in the instructions it says to disconnect the negative battery cable before beginning installation. Is this really necessary. On my last car I never did it, and had no problems. I have a tune on my car to so I dont know if that plays in somewhere. Need Help. Thanks.
