Default sidewall question

what is the reason that people go with a smaller sidewall on the rear? for example 265/40/18 in the front and 295/5/18 in the rear.

Never seen a 295/5 tire? Must have been a print error. Anyways, I am running 245/40/20 fronts and 275/35/20 rears on my s197. You can feel the road more through the front tires and would want a better ride quality with fatter rubber, jmo. And rears usually are wider for a staggered wheel and the aspect ratio is smaller for a wider size rubber.
