Fox Slick Size
Ok so I haven't been on here in a while. I am a young guy and just now starting to get serious into drag racing. I have several vehicles I make passes in on rare occasions but recently bought a 93 notch strictly for track use. The car is pretty mild to start with. I want to get a lot of strip experience b4 sprayin the **** out of this car. Not that I don't have a bunch of time behind 5-6-700 hp street cars, but trying to turn a consistant time at the track is quite different. The car is a 1993 notch 5 speed. 5.0, windsor jr.s, stage 1 trick flow cam, gt40 upper and lower off an explorer. 3.73 and the stiffest limited slip I think I have ever felt. That's pretty much it. No ac ps. Battery in the trunk, a bunch of little normal stuff not worth mentioning. I bought the car pretty much as it is, the parts were there and I just finished the project. I finally got the car to commerce friday and 60 ft times were awful on the bs street tire on the car. I want to put a slick on the car and am looking for advice. the car currently has 15x8 welds on the rear. I don't mind upgrading the rear wheels, my biggest question is what is as big as you can reasonably get away with on a fox? I don't mind a little massaging, but I have no interest in tubbing the car either. THis is a budget bracket car. Any other advice is greatly appreciated. Launch rpm.... tire brand....proven suspension set ups... anything that will help me win on saturdays. Also, I have many(and I mean many) bad experiences with t5's. This is a low power car right now and I definitely lift on each shift. Any worries launching on slicks with a t5? I know the main concern is 3rd but just curious. Plan on upgrading to a 3550 when I spray the car, but that is an off season project not this year. Thanks guys
OK..... I am NOT a 1/4 mile guy in to even the slightest degree, but will give you some input the best I can.
Tires: Without tubbing, you are not going to get very much more than you are now. Take a look at ***THIS*** thread for some ideas as to how wide you can go. Due to the way slicks are advertised, I just don't know how to tell you a comparative size between those and street tires. As you mentioned, some massaging will be necessary to run a wider tire, so figure to go MC Hammer and Sister Sledge to get much more tire out back.
Suspension: This, my friend, is my bag, but my experience is not geared toward the launch-pad, but rather the open track. The absolute #1 item you need, but likely already has, would be FLSFC's. A cage would be a good idea as well, not only for safety, but stiffen the frame that much more. Head over to TeamZ, Baseline or Kenny Brown for your suspension needs.
General: Head over to the 5.0 section and post this question there for additional input that directly relates to your car and goals. I ran an '85 GT for over 20 years, but never took it to the track. I did have a '72 Vega with a 4-banger and took it to the track once. Got an 18.9 at 69 MPH

10 1/2" tire which is way more than you need if you run a et drag
if you remove or reverse the quads end for end you will clear 10 1/2" no problem
even on a et street that will hook for you. i didnt read the whole thing.... only got as far as tire size.
and i would run the 10 1/2's on the 8" wheel you already have

So i posted this in 5.0 tech section and it was moved. Despite this being more than just a tire size question.................. anyhow. The car has sub frame connectors. So 10.5 with a 26 or 28 inch tall tire? How much massaging is needed to fit that? I'm sorry that I sound dumb but quads?
Sounds like it was moved due to tire question as it is the major focus and in the title of thread.
I recommend that once you get the tire info you need, or most of it. Re-write it with only info about launching questions and place it back in the 5.0 section. I am the most regular person here and cannot be of much help, unfortunately. Keep checking back and hopefully figure out what you need.

I know man, I'm not tryin to be a problem. Moderators have to do whatever they feel like is best. I just also know I would be getting A LOT more feedback if this were in the section I originally posted it in. Not sure how this is not a technical question related to 5.0 cars...... Maybe I should find another mustang forum where my simple questions can be answered. I think a 28 by 10.5 by 15 will work on this car but I don't feel like spending a bunch of mula on tires, having them mounted and then having to sell them for a big loss. Especially on a car this has be done a million times on.
i really do appreciate the help though Jazzer. You seem like a pretty straight up guy. O and that's a pretty nice lookin saleen. Not a huge carbon fiber fan but it looks pretty nice and sets the car off.
