Engine oil is the most commonly serviced item when it comes to your Ford Mustang. Fortunately, it's also a very easy task to learn how to do. If you want to save yourself a few bucks by learning this easy DIY, and feel the sense of accomplishment that comes with working on your own vehicle, then let's dig into this DIY.

Materials Needed

  • Oil catch pan
  • Jack (or pair of ramps)
  • 2 jack stands
  • Funnel
  • Crawler (optional)
  • Paper towels
  • Wheel chocks
  • Ratchet and 16mm socket or wrench
  • Oil filter wrench

Step 1 – Prepare the car

Park the car on a level surface. If you have a pair of ramps, you can simply place them under the front wheels and drive up on them to raise up the front of the car. Otherwise, use a floor jack and a pair of jack stands to lift up the front. Place a wheel chock under each of the rear wheels and set the parking brake to ensure the car doesn't roll back while you are underneath it.

Step 2 – Drain old oil from engine

Pop the hood and locate your oil filler cap. Remove the oil filler cap by twisting it off. Slide the oil catch pan underneath the car and position it just under the oil drain plug on the oil pan. Unscrew the oil drain plug using a ratchet and 16mm socket or wrench, then finish removing it by hand. Once removed, let all of the oil drain from the engine and reinstall the drain plug, being careful not to over-tighten. Remove the old oil filter using an oil filter wrench, placing the drain pain underneath it to catch any spills. Use paper towels to clean up any spills.

Step 3 – Fill engine with fresh oil

Pour a little bit of fresh oil into your new oil filter and rub it around the rubber O-ring. Set the new oil filter in place and tighten by hand, then tighten with an oil filter wrench until it is just snug. Place a funnel in your oil filter neck and fill with fresh oil. Refer to your owner's manual for the oil capacity of your engine. Replace the oil filler cap. Start your engine and check for any leaks. Lower the car off of the jack stands and check your oil level using the dipstick. Ensure that your oil is within the recommended range, as over or underfilling the oil can cause engine damage. Also, be sure to dispose of old oil properly.
