Ford Mustang GT 2005-2014: How to Reset Your ECU

This simple procedure will allow you to reset your Ford Mustang's ECU. It takes a few minutes and saves a lot of dollars.

The ECU (Engine Control Unit) in your Ford Mustang is a computer system that is designed to learn the habits of your car. It's made to make your car experience unique to you, so it memorizes your driving styles and your tunings. Resetting the ECU means you get to clear its memory to factory settings and start all over again. Your car may run rough for a very short time after your reset, simply because it has to re-learn the settings of the sensors and such. The process takes a few minutes and has been known to be effective among forum users. Read on to learn how you can reset the ECU in your Ford Mustang GT.

Material Needed

  • Wrench

Step 1 – Turn ignition to "ON"

Insert the key into your ignition, and turn it to the ON position, but don't start the car. Wait a few seconds until the lights on the dash go away.

Step 2 – Press gas pedal

Slowly press the gas pedal all the way down to the floor. As soon as it hits the floor, release it slowly all the way up.

Step 3 – Start the car

Wait six seconds after you've release the gas pedal, and turn the car on. Your ECU should now be reset.

Another Procedure to Reset the ECU:

Step 1 – Disconnect the battery

Open the hood on your Mustang, locate the battery, and disconnect its terminals.

Step 2 – Reconnect the battery

Wait 30 minutes, then reconnect the battery. Start your car. Your ECU should be reset.
