1967 Shelby GT500 featured on U.S. postage stamp

The United States Postal Service is featuring the 1967 Shelby GT500 as one of the subjects of their latest Forever stamp collections, the third in their America on the Move series. The Shelby GT500 is one of five muscle cars to be highlighted in the set alongside the 1966 Pontiac GTO, the 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona, the 1970 Plymouth Hemi ‘Cuda and the 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS. “Each of these cars represents the adventurous spirit of the muscle-car era,” the USPS states on their web site. “Typically equipped with big, powerful engines, the five high-performance vehicles depicted on the stamps represent the era’s adventurous spirit.”

Each of the stamps were created by artist Tom Fritz who used brightly colored oil points on hardboard. Fritz, who based each of the paintings on photographs, tried to “capture the emotive quality of the vehicles” with each image and says that each of the paintings represents how he sees the cars in his memory from growing up in Southern California.
