This ’68 GT Fastback Represents Yet Another Great Story Highlighting the Drive Behind Restoration Projects

Over the years, if we’ve learned one thing covering the world of Mustangs, it’s that behind every great restoration, there’s a great story about how it all came about.

Such is the case with this gorgeous 1968 Ford Mustang GT Fastback, as highlighted in a recent Driving.Ca report. Apparently, the Mustang was eight-years-old and had close to 90,000 miles on the odometer when the original owner decided he was done with the GT, after damaging the right side in an accident.

But that didn’t stop Keith Hunter from seeing the potential in the car, which he discovered in a junkyard in Merritt, B.C. in the late ‘70s. Even though the Mustang’s 390-cubic-inch engine and 4-speed transmission were long gone, Hunter still committed to bringing the car back to life.

After all, a ’68 Mustang GT Fastback isn’t the kind of thing one just skirts past, regardless of what condition the car is in. Hunter recognized that, and went to work making the necessary repairs. But family responsibilities caused him to postpone the restoration project after completing the body work.

Some 37-years later, Keith’s son, Brian, decided to restore the Mustang to use at his wedding. But that only gave him 18 months to get the project done.

“The car was out in the yard and, every time I looked at it, it was deteriorating further and would [soon] rot to the ground,” says Brian. “The weather stripping had shrunk so badly, the windshield was letting water in, soaking the carpet. That was the final straw.”

Brian then went to his father and asked if he’d like to help finish restoring the Mustang Fatback GT. And as you can see, the rest is Hunter family history.
