Motor Trend is back with another episode of “Hot Rod Garage,” and they’re still working on that 2005 Mustang GT.

Since the team is trying to make usable power while keeping all the modifications as simple bolt-ons and emissions legal, the next step was to try a cold air intake to see what kind of power the car could make. Rather than use a simple cheap intake, they opt for a unit from Ford Racing and a simple pre-made tune.

To check just how effective their new intake and tune really is, they strapped the Stang to a dyno before and after. The before numbers from the 4.6-liter 3-valve motor is 265 horsepower and 265 pounds of twist at the wheels. Not bad for a machine that rated at 300 ponies and 315 pounds at the crank from the factory.

A quick time-lapse install of the intake and the ECU flash results in a new dyno run that sees the Mustang’s motor jump in power to 283.5 horsepower and 285.1 pound-feet of torque. That is a pretty solid gain for such a simple change.

The video doesn’t end there however, as we still have an exhaust mod to get through. Sadly, since the show is based in California, they can’t swap to long-tube headers, due to emissions requirements. Still, the car already has a cat-back exhaust change, and “Hot Rod” decided that even more aggressive mufflers were in order.

Once again they tapped Ford Racing for the gear, and the result is a car that went from sounding angry, to sounding like it’s fueled with hellfire. Sadly, the new exhaust does also come with a 5 hp cut across the rev-range. They didn’t have enough time to check why, but expect this issue to come back in another episode.

If you want a better look at just how easy it is to make this mod, just press play and get to ordering your parts.
