Engine serial number
Hello. I'm not really smart when it comes to car tech but im trying to learn. But I have a 1997 Gt mustang i bought off the lot a day after it arrived this past december. Ive been told its 4.6 DOHC but also that DOHC's are cobra engines. Can someone give me some info on this and where to find the engine serial number. Thank you.

RE: Engine serial number
if it is a GT then it is not a Dual Over Head Cam Engine. The reason for this is because it has 1 intake valve and 1 exhaust valve per cylinder which requires only 1 cam over each of the 2 rows of 4 cylinders. That makes it a Single Over Head Cam Engine. A DOHC has 2 intake valves and 2 exhaust valves for each cylinder which requires 2 cams over each of the 2 rows of 4 cylinders. I hope that wasnt too confusing for you. If you wanna make things easier just take a pic of your engine and post it. For most people on this forum it will be easy to tell if it is SOHC or DOHC.

use the vin number to find out. You can enter the vin at www.carfax.com. It'll specify what engine it has under type. Then you'll know, UNLESS someone change the motor, and unfortunately I don't know where that serial number would be.

im not sure. : / Thats why Im trying figure out. Ive been told. Just trying to figure out the facts. As far as I would guess i would think its a normal gt. The guy before me was a Marine so he had money to do stuff to it. It has some parts on it but I dont know.

Should be stamped on the side of the block. I can't remember which side it is...
Take a picture of the engine, and post it here. I guarantee you w/ in 30 seconds, someone will be able to positively identify the engine type and any other modifications done to it...
