275 on an 8 inch rim?

sorry, I was on my phone earlier. I'm running those 275/40/18 Falken 452's on the rear right now.
I gained about 1.5" of extra rubber per tire going from those 235 (9.25" wide) to the 275 (10.82" wide)...however, the tires don't sit flat on the outer edges since my rims are 0.5" narrower than the minimum recommended width. So I'm only really seeing a 1" gain in rubber. No matter what pressure I run, I have about 1/2" of contact area on the outer edges that just isn't touching anything.
and with that narrow sidewall, I am truly scared of popping the bead off. that is why they are out back. they should see very little lateral forces compared to what the front tires see constantly.
if you keep your rims, you should probably look at a 255 width maximum. I'm pushing it with the 275's on my 8.5" rims...IMO it would be downright unsafe to run 275 on a 8" rim.
I priced out some 9" and 10" rims on American Muscle last night for Sh*t's and Giggles...$900 and that includes new lugs and all TPMS stuff...if your car is a 05/06, you can cut about $200 off that price because you won't need the TPMS stuff.
nothing looks better on a Muscle Car than some wide as hell rear tires. it just speaks mean

A wide tire on a too-narrow rim tends to run a little warmer than the same tire on a rim that's within the mfr's recommended width range. And specifically where in the sidewall it runs warmer moves a little. The place it moves to may be less capable of putting up with the extra heat in the long run.
Let's say it's not a guaranteed fail. But you absolutely are giving away some of your tires' margin for no good reason.
BTW, 50, maybe 55 profile and lower are NOT supposed to look like the baloon-y tires on 1960's luxury cars.

Norm is right.
The less movement around the rim, the less heat...
That's why a slightly deflated tire will blow up a lot sooner than an over inflated one, it gets way too hot.
You see pieces of tire from trucks on the Interstate all the time for that reason.
Once a tire gets weak and start losing air pressure, it will work too hard, get too hot and it's gone in no time after that.
I'm running 275s on a 8.5 rim up front and it's fine for the street but I feel it's the last call really.
If I was gonna run that car on the track (road course), I wouldn't go with those specs...

If you do and you have a problem, the insurance company can deny your claim for not following the tire manufacturers recommended wheel width for a given tire. I wouldn't do it but that's your call. If you do, try not to end up on one of those Jackass shows.

Damn TPMS stuff jacking the prices up.
These seem pretty sweet at $144 a wheel. 18 X 9 with a dish. So roughly $600. But then the damn TPMS stuff....
