Debate thread - Built GT or GT500
#12
I would pass on the 09 GT500 and get a 2011. Instead of all of the pullies and BS, I would switch the blower to a 2.8 KB. Leave the exhaust alone, add some injectors and a dual BAP and you can make 500-800 rwhp. No one would have a clue it has that much power.
Everything is already built. Mostly OEM. The 2011 has better suspension and more creature comforts. Much better than the previous generation GT500s.
Instead of a 6060 in a GT, I would put a built automatic in it. It would be signifcantly faster.

If you enjoy the build side of modding cars and don't mind the headaches associated with pulling a motor keep the GT.
If you want to do a few bolt-ons and have 600+hp at your disposal all while being quite reliable get the GT500.

I would almost "GIVE" someone my 2011 GT just so that I dont have to drive the piece of junk any more.
Then someone else can worry about replacing the completely useless transmission for something that WORKS.
I have had the car for a week and I cant wait to get rid of it.
Just got back from the dealer and told them I want my old car back because this one is undriveable.
They get one chance to fix it, or it is gone.

OP, I would definitely get the GT500. 15k into a used GT is too much IMO. You will end up putting much more into it down the line just to keep it on the road. If at all possible, I would get a 2010 or 2011 GT500 for the same reasons mentioned by Simon1.

Yes, the 2010 and 2011 GT500 is very nice with changes, just not to the rear end. I still can't seem to like it. I also do NOT want to spend more than 40,000 on a car and that also rules out the new GT500.
So I just want to stick with the latest year of the body style I do love, and upgrade it.

If Carroll died tomorrow, I don't see the GT500's increasing in value overnight.
A mint '07 used one that sold new for $20k over sticker can be bought all day long for around $30k. While it's true they are specialty cars, the only thing Shelby about them is his name on it as it is built in a Ford plant. I think it will be many years before they are true collectables. I'm sure there are plans in place to continue the lineage and name in some form after his death.
