Cops be buggin
Sup guys, i live in nc and i have the taillight covers on my car (smoked). I have been in front of sheriffs and state troopers and they never said anything but i got pulled today by a barney fife town cop today and was rude an he was going to right me a town ticket($35) but instead i went around and popped them off haha he got ill then. He said if he saw them on again i was getting a ticket, I paid like 100 for them is there any way around this? Like any ideas from you guys or am i just not gonna be able to ave them? thanks

Yeah, you hit your brakes and show him that your brake lights are clearly visible in the daytime and the tinting causes no legal obstruction to your car.
Unless they can prove that the tinit it past a certain point they can't do anything. Call them on their stupid crap, guy sounds like he was just having a bad day and wanted to write someone a ticket.

i didnt get a ticket cuz i took them off, but i told him they were just as visible as if they were off, he said it doesnt matter, he said i could have tint on my headlights during the day but the that was the only exception

I'm reading that he uses covers and doesn't have tinted tails. The covers block too much light making them illegal. A film/tint will allow more light to go through depending on how dark you want it. I don't know NC's law on lights though.

I am a cop in New Orleans...I can't comment on NC laws but in Louisiana its not that the lights are tinted but that the light be visible at a certain distance away. I believe Louisiana is something like 100 or 300 feet away for tail/ brake lights. Not 100% sure on the distances as I'm not a traffic cop and could actually care less about tinted tail lights. I have yet to see even a traffic cop carry a 100-300 foot tape measure in their unit.

Any rating on lumens or even % of tint is a moot point, because 99.99999% chance the ordinance in question isn't worded that way. It IS entirely possible though, that the ordinance the cop was referring to restricts tail light covers of any type completely though. You have to know the ordinance before you know if you have a defense or not, and you obviously don't. Even most small towns have ordinances listed online, look it up.
