Oh they definitely shine through. I don't think I layed the VHT down as heavily on the reserse lights though. Just enough to make them look black. I'm sure I won't be able to see anything when backing up, but others will be able to see that I am reversing.

Valspar interior/exterior clear gloss I believe. I just grabbed it off my shelf because it was the most full can of clear coat lol. I don't think it was specifically made for automotive applications. We'll see how it does after another rain and car wash. You can use pretty much any brand you want.
