Sounds like a bad stepper motor. The 05's and most 06's are notorious for bad stepper motors in the cluster.

Do a forum search. I know that a few folks have bought the stepper motors on ebay and did the install themselves and some shipped off their clusters to have it done. I can't recall the cost.

I have the same issues with my RPM gauge and temperature gauge. RPM gauge is sometimes off my 250-300 RPM and my temperature gauge will only work if it is 55 degrees or warmer. When working, the temperature gauge sometimes gets stuck at the halfway mark and when the car fully wams up, the needle is in the HOT zone area. It will usually correct itself over a couple of start ups. If it takes longer, I will disconnect the battery for 30 min. or so and let it reset itself.

Stepper motors are around $5-6 each. Do a search on eBay and you'll find plenty. I saw a good write-up on replacing them, but it's in another forum and I suspect linking to it would be frowned upon. Google "Mustang stepper motor replacement" and you'll find it.

+1, although I messed up installing mine and screwed it up there isn't much to it.
