Default 4.10 gears

ok. i've got a '96 auto gt. now that most of you agree that 4.10s are the way to go, what other parts do i need. i went to rpmoutlet.com and they said that i'd need a modified cross shaft for me to use the 4.10s. here's a picture of it. crmotorsports.com says that i need a speedo recalibration gear. do i need both. also, if i get the recalibration gear, do i need a speedcal from like dallas mustangs?

You shouldn't need that cross shaft but I could be wrong. The cailbration tool you will need if you want to be correct on your speedo.

If you have a GT you don't need it. The cross shaft is for the V6's. They have 7inch rearends and GT's have 8.8's. 4:10's are the biggest you can put in the 8.8 with out modifing the rearend.

Silver is right...I agree.

Sad to say this is not the first time I heard that RPMoutlet told another GT owner this.[sm=smiley13.gif]

You don't need that cross shaft! You will need a new gasket for your rear end...you can get that at any autoparts store, just check to see if you have the 8, or 10 hole gasket, & you will also need a pinion bearing seal (or some sh*t like that) which can also be bought at the autoparts store. Lastly, get some RP Max gear 75w140. Have fun...I have a 4.10 in the garage right now.

i just read in the may mm&ff that i'd need what they called a "chip" to keep the transmission shift points in sync and that running the 4.10s without a "chip" would damage my transmission and cause the transmission to shift too soon. are these guys for real? are they talking about a speedcal or recalibration gear? oh yeah. nobody answered if i'd need a speedcal if i get the speedo recalibration gear.

Well you need a speed recalbration gear. the only problem is that the tranny seems to eat them up in less than a year. You can chip the car to correct for the new gear set, which is usually recommended for any car. But the problem comes if you are still modding it, then the chip may/will need to be reburned to match the new set-up. You can try the speed calbration gear. That will get you going you just may need to change it every so often.

you dont need it. but to be safe you should buy the gear complete installation kit for like 100 dollars and it comes with the new bearings shims and crush sleeve. also you could buy a polished rear differential cover for looks or but the rearend gasket also comes with that kit
