Honestly... The last thing you want to do is cut a hole in your muffler. "Yes" you can, and yes it will make it louder, but it will sounds HORRIFIC.
If you want some quick sound without a catback buy some reputable mufflers, like some LM1's or some Magnaflows or some Dynomax Mufflers and have them welded in.
Do NOT go with glasspacks. In all honestly I would just wait to get a catback... I did weld in magnaflows and wasted a lot of money because they were not as loud as I wanted.
If you wanted to weld in some mufflers that would make a good impact... Get some Loudmouth 1 mufflers and weld them in, thats you best bet for some good sound quickly and fairly cheap.

+1 on what meebx said . Also by cutting a hole in your muffler your going to reduce your back pressure which in some cases isnt good. It could lean your engine out and that could lean to burning things up in your eng like valves, etc. Just get a cheap flowmaster, they sell for about 70 bucks for the 40 series and just have them welded in place of your exsiting muffler. Wait a second.. What are you doing, when you buy something like a LM1/2 that is a resonator, more than a Muffler, and has a straight through design?? Or, what are you doing when you put on the 40 Series by Flowmaster, 2 chamber??
You're relieving back-pressure, thus making your engine breathe better.. It's not very good to just chop off your mid-pipe and run w/ open manifolds/headers up front. THAT will burn your valves quicker than just a hole in your muffler..
Sure you can cut a hole in your mufflers, but as Meebix said, it'll sound bad... Give it a try, but make sure you'll have some way to fix it... Then you'll see if you like it or not..
Actually, just take your muffler off completely if you can. Tell us how it sounds to you, and then divide that in 2, and that's what your car will sound like w/ a hole in the muffler..
