Default Stock comp tune

I was just curious, I am totally new to the engine mod scene, first nice car, and first I been interested in finding out about tunes... anyway to get to the point. I was curious I see they sell computer chips here and there (diablosport etc.) is that in place of the stock computer, or is that along with the stock computer. and is it worthe it to just tune your stock computer, or go with one of these aftermarket chips?

I tired to post a thread like this before and got the same no response. I have a 98 Cobra and was wondering if the computer had a nice chip in it already and only needed a tune or if I should go with an upgrade. Doesn't seem to be too big of a crowd for this.

Unless you're driving an auto, there's not really any point to getting a chip on a stock car. The chip, by the way, gets plugged into the stock computer and overrides the stock programming.

If you're going to spend the money, I'd buy a SCT X3 so that you can at least adjust for gears or other mods down the road.
