Yesterday i was getting onto the highway and i was in the top of second then when i shifted into third my car backfired and smoke came out of my pipes? What teh deuce?

something like that happed to me once, i was in decelerating in 3rd at 4K and the thing let off two big backfires BLAP BLAP! but i also think i'm running a little on the rich side, so i figured it was unburned fuel igniting in the hot exhaust

Does it feel down on power? Slight misfire? Check the plugs if it continues.
