Red Line dangerous?
YEs it is to stop from over reving the motor and having the rotational mass rip itself apart. But, hitting the rev limiter puts a different kind of load on the motor that can cause damage. Hitting the limiter every once and a while is OK. Riding it is not. Depending on the system most rev limiters cut ignition for a second to allow the motor to drop revs. But that allows unburned gas into the exhaust system. which could possibly go boom and blow out your cats. I have seen it happen on my friends F-body. Can you say great wall of fire behind him and flying red hot metal chips shooting every where? I can LOL!

If it continues to be a problem invest in a Autometer small shift light and tuck it away where you can see it out of the corner of your eye. It's not rice like a giant tac and an oversized shift light. Set the rev chip like 600rpm less then what you want to shift at. It will take some time to get use to reacting to the lite when it comes on but once you get use to it yo will probably anticiapated and already shifting when it comes on. Just bump it up to the rev's you feel comfortable with once you get use to it. The setup will probably hit you up for under a 100. Worth it if you are conserened with hitt the limiter.
