Very weird Check Engine Q

Very weird Check Engine Q
OK, I've had my car since the first day of July, its an 00 GT.
Right before I had my oil change, my check engine light came on, I had it checked at autozone, and the guy said the code was a "small leak," probably my gas cap or gas cap gasket.
I think, oooook, so I go home, reset my code and make sure my gas cap is on. The light doesnt come back on. "Sweet!"
2 days later, while driving on one of the highways over here, the 190, the light turned on again (mind you, the 190 is where it turned on in the first place), so I was pissed, but realized I just filled up. So I reset and check again, light stays off.
Right before our road trip of 200 miles on Saturday, I filled up, making sure the gas cap was VERY tight. Drove that whole tank and the tank after that with no light.
Yesterday, driving my GF to work (which is why im on the 190 so much), the light turns on AGAIN. Again I reset it, and check my gas cap.
Today, AGAIN, but this time I noticed something. Its always in the EXACT SAME SPOT on the highway. I don't notice any bumps or potholes or anything abnormal about this spot of highway, only that it is under an overpass.
I've checked under my car, and have never leaked anything besides from the A/C.
I'll probably end up replacing the gas cap and the gasket, but could there be anything else im missing here? Just seems odd to me.

It's either aP0440 or aP1440 im pretty sure, because he said small leak.
However, when I undo my gas cap, it REAKS of gas, so im guessing it isn't sealing the way it should?

Bump...sorta.
Was looking at my gas cap area, and found out that I think that metal part thats supposed to seal the gas tank doesnt close all the way, and I think thats why it reeks like gas whenever I open the gas cap.
Does anyone know anything about fixing/replacing this piece? I think I finally found out why my car was throwing the code.

that piece probably is a part of the whole gas tube going to the tank... also... see if its bent from like shoving a gas pump in there and maybe it can be bent back.

The reason it throws the code in the same place every time is because when you reset your system you have to go through a bunch of different sequences for the computer to check all the sensors and part of that is highway driving over a certain speed for a certain time.

P0440: Evaporative Emission Purge Control Solenoid Damaged.
P1440: Does not exist.
With a P0440 OBD-II trouble code, diagnosis can be tricky at times. Here are some things to try:
[ul][*]Remove and reinstall the gas cap, clear the code, and drive for a day and see if the codes come back.[*]Inspect the EVAP system for cuts/holes in tubes/hoses[*]Inspect for damaged or disconnected hoses around the Evap purge solenoid[*]Check and/or replace the sensor[*]Check and/or replace the purge valve[*]Have a professional use a smoke machine to detect leaks [/ul]
