RE: Wan to put 03/04 Cobra engine in 00' GT possible?
Lmao, no lame body kit.
I bought my 2000 GT for only 10 grand and it's in perfect shape, I got an amazing deal. Bodys mint, engine runs perfect.
For appearance I just got chrome 18inch saleens, 10.5 in the rear, 9 in the front. I got a 2 1/2 cowl cobra r hood and the 03/04 cobra bumper. Then I have the tint all around, muffs, midpipe, sound system, bigger exhaust tips. I just wantto re-do the interior (have the cloth seats :/ ) then start on the engine. Then I realized why waste all that money on the engine when I could just dump the 03 cobra engine in there and then with another grand bring it up to 500hp.

Who buys 17" Saleens? It's like having a mentally challenged girlfriend. Everyone's proud of you for having a GF and that you're not gay but they still feel bad for you.

dont forget dude, your then going to need new brakes , because the power of the engine is going to need good brakes to stop in time and stock GT brakes wont do. Your gon need suspension work as well. But the reason i always liked the whole cobra engine inside a GT body is that the its going to weigh couple hundred less

I was doing some research on the internet regarding swapping a 4.6L V8 SOHC for a 4.6L V8 DOHC (GT to a Cobra, or atleast that's what I'd like to do). I came across this forum thread and decided to make an account to restart this thread. I'd like to hear your opinions on the pros/cons of this idea.
I've got myself a 1997 Mustang GT (Mach 460 "Premium" sound system) with a 5 speed manual, the only thing that isn't stock is the K&N Air filter. Not bad for a first car at 19 eh? But I've always dreamed of having a Cobra! So I got to talking to my dad and he made the point that if I were to get a Cobra, my insurance would sky rocket! I think that if it were possible and cost effective that it would be something I would like to do, plus I get the benefit of learning how to work on my car, which in my opinion is crucial.
So, to sum it all up: Would a ('04?) 4.6L DOHC be hard to swap with my ('97) 4.6L SOHC? What necessary items would I be looking at? New transmission? New gearbox (4.6L SOHC = 5spd, 4.6L DOHC = 6spd)? New ECU? Etc etc etc. (Forgive me if there is any ignorance, "I'm not stupid, I'm just young". Please respond with any advice!
Its not cost efficient at all. The above MORON who thinks a 2v to 4V swap is as simple as $6,000 is brain dead and clearly never even started to think about the process of this swap. Especially considering all the fancy shmancy stuff he listed along with the block swap.
Your insurance will not be that much higher, if higher at all if you go to a Cobra. Don't mean to insult pops....but....the insurance company really doesn't dive into it that in-depth. As soon as you get a GT they throw you in a performance category. Taking the step up to a Cobra wont land you in any more expensive category. I know this from researching insurance prices when I got my car....I was also 19 at the time.
I did my 01 swap for a little under 11 grand. That's car included, all the work done by my father and me. If you factor in labor, THAT is where you'll start to get expensive.
.02 from someone who ACTUALLY has done something like this.

I did some research last night after I made the post. A 2004 Cobra on craigslist is about $24k around here, so let's go with that figure. '97 GT "Ellen" = $3600 so there's about a difference of $21k. Figure a 4v engine on eBay costs $6k so that leaves $15k in misc upgrades, whatever is needed. Seems to me like I could get some great new product for her with $15k along with that brand new engine. What else might be needed for this kind of a project, parts wise?
@Hangwire Thanks for reinforcing my statement of being a newbie and making me feel welcome I was hoping you could elaborate on the intricate process of a block swap because it seems like you, along with everyone, knows more about it than I do. Please repost a reply with some details of the process, possibly from personal experience? As for insurance it runs a little high for me. Within 3 months of having my car and license I got a ticket @ 101 in a 65max, which came out to a $850 fine w/ 30 day suspension... But all in all I think it would be a fun project working on my car, learning how it works, while upgrading it a whole bunch
@Mock01 Thanks for your reply. Sounds like what I'm looking for. A little project with dad, before he gets too old! $11k for the engine and what else? I'd love to hear what else went into it so I can get a better picture of what I would be looking at! Along with any other recommended upgrades... Figure I'm trying to keep my cost to $21k total, if that. I don't have a whole lot of money to spend, but would love to share this project with my dad, learn how to work on my car and in the end learn a whole lot while getting myself an "almost" new feel to the car
