So, what would you do if you had to take the motor out?

Well, I may have dodged the bullet. I used a screwdriver as a stethoscope and couldn't hear knocking in the valve covers, nor the oil pan, so I checked the front cover and had the most noise. I dropped some seafoam in the crankcase and the knocking is almost gone. Thanks for the advice. I will keep it in mind if I need to crack the motor open.

Well, apparently this was a boomerang bullet cause the knocking is back with a vengeance. It's coming from the oil pan region and is getting louder, so I am getting ready to pull the damned motor.

So, lets talk PI heads. How exactly does this work? From what I have gathered with the search function, the 01+ heads work with the 96 valve covers. What about the camshafts, do I transfer my 96 cams to the 01 head, or do I leave the 01 cam in? Does anything else need to be done? Obviously I would need the 99+ head gaskets. Anything else?

Edit:
One last thing, can the heads/intake come off any 01+ ford 4.6L? Crown vic, towncar, F-150, etc?

you will need the complete heads, cams, intake manifold and gaskets from a 99-04 mustang. im not sure about using a crown vic or f150, im sure someone wil chime in.

you willl need the heads leave the cams and vlavetrain and you will need the intake. best would be try to find one of the updated intakes that has the aluminum piece in the front for the coolant instead of being all composite material. and a tune.

So, a dyno tune is what I need correct? I am not far from Dallas Mustangs, so I can get the dyno tune there. One guy says to get the valve train you say not to, so who is right?

you will need the complete head/valvetrain/cams + intake for the P.I. swap, if you dont know just do a search theres 1000 threads about this on here already and id say theres a sticky about it too. a tune would also be a good thing.

Ok, I am still in the denial stage. I don't mind pulling the motor, but rather than be hasty, lets ask questions first. I made this video of the exhaust and you can REALLY hear the knocking. It's the worst on the first start up of the day, which is when I made this. After the running for a second, it will quite down and only tap at idle.

This sound like a rod, or a main bearing knocking, or more like a lifter to you?
