RE: TECH: Gears? The Know-All to 96-04 Gear Questions
Anyone know how to figure out what my gear ratio is from the tach reading and speedo reading?
I bought a used 98 GT and would like to know if the previous owner changed the rear end ratio.
I get 60MPH at 2000 RPM
Thanks

Just throwing out a quick tip....
Everyone says....you get 3.73's and you'll regret it.......well, I am living proof. My 3.73's aren't enough, but I'm not paying for a swap! BTW...I would get 4.30s if I did it again!

RE: TECH: Gears? The Know-All to 96-04 Gear Questions
Pre-99 Automatic GT's can use a Speedcal from Abbott or Dallas Mustang, 99+ GT's need to purchase a tuner to adjust the speedo, for automatics...
Due to different transmission gearing, it is best for 96-98 Manual GT's to have 3.73 gears & Auto's to have 4.10 gears.
For 99+ Auto GT's 4.10 gears are the best bang for your buck, for 99+ Manual GT's your best gear selection will be 4.10's at a minimum, as the tranny gear ratio was slightly altered for slightly better gas mileage.
I have 4.30 gears. At the track, with my mods, I was near redline in 4th gear, which is good. With some taller, stickier tires I will make maximum use of my gears.
Hope this helps some more.

Well I have 4:10's in my baby..and shes one strong *** pony..and when I wanna race..then 1st gear is used just for a launch...1st gear in Mustangs doesn't do too much for you anyways..2nd and 3rd are strong as ***** in stangs and that's where I win my races..1st gear won't decide a race for you..unless you totally f*ck it up..
and according to my Uncle: "1st gear should never serve a purpose other than launching in ANY type of muscle car. Period." haha hes a definat man
