First things to do on a 1998 GT with 97,000 miles?
Hi,
A friend of mine is buying a 1998 GT convertible with 97,000 miles. I suggested him to have an oil change right away but there may be other things to do.
What do you recommend doing? The previous owner does not seem to be a car guy.
- Oil change?
- Filter change? Which ones?
- Additional proactive changes?
How much these operations would cost and what would be a correct price for a car like this (fair condition).
Thanks!

when ever I get a used car I change all the fluids in the car and filters, kind of like a clean slate to work on. I bought my stang in MA and before driving it back to NY I changed the oil in it in his driveway (i asked before hand and it was ok ) If had been siting for 2 .5 years.

^+1, change every fluid it has--engine oil, power steering fluid, brake fluid, coolant, transmission fluid, and and rear-end oil. You can bet that everything but the engine oil has never been changed...

do a full compression check. its easy, takes 30 minutes, and costs $30-40 for the tool. that will show you the condition of the piston rings, head gasket, and valves. change the spark plugs and wires. change fluids, clean the maf sensor and the iat sensor, change the fuel filter, clean the iac valve and the egr valve, check the brake pads, have the battery and alternator tested, check all fuses, replace all light bulbs, check the headlight alignment, have the suspension aligned, check air pressure in tires, replace pcv valve, have the a/c system serviced, change the drive belt, change the air filter and you should have a car running like new by then. well if you wanted to be really particular you could take the whole intake off and clean it out. would possibly gain a couple hp if its really gunked up, but then you have to buy new intake manifold gaskets
