Problem with car lunging during acceleration
#11
Is there any way to check the cops like you would a normal spark plug wire because I can't afford to take it to a dealership and when it was dealer serviced before I got it they ran the oil filter on with an air wrench and marred the threads up, so I'm not too trusting of their work. Plus, if any are bad, I'm just going to buy accel ones and replace the set.

It has me stumped because under a really heavy load, like when I get in on it, it has no hesitation at all, but just normal acceleration. There is no check engine light and no codes and even if it did throw a code I don't have a way to read that. Can I just pull a plug at a time and check for a spark like you can with older motors. I've been working on small blocks for years but efi and the computer always has me second guessing what to do. If it wasn't for inspection it would have a carbed 302 in it.

theres really no other way to test coil other than a scan tool, you can remove and inspect them. check for water or the ends of the rubber boots can crack and split. What brand of sparkplug did you use when you replaced them? I would recommend using only autolite or motorcraft plugs. Oh and if you find a bad coil boot you can buy just the boots for around $5 each.

in my experiences, a weak coil will usually become obvious during high load at low rpm (flooring it in 4th at 25mph) it wouldn't hurt to try cleaning the MAF then reseting the PCM and running a few bottles of injector cleaner

Is it always the same throttle position? If you push through the position does it go away? if so it could be the throttle position sensor is going bad. 1 bad cop would not cause bucking. For the hell of it I would clean the crank shaft position sensor connector.

Its been getting worse and its not always at the same position of throttle. Actually ran into a guy who has been racing fords for 50 years and runs a garage that told me its the coils and they don't always throw a code so I'm just ordering a set of accels off of racer-warehouse for 168 and hoping that fixes it. Thanks for the help everyone.

Rushed to get the coils in before the snow hits here in Delaware today after work so I wouldnt have to be out in it and because I wanted to test drive it before my car is stuck for a few days. Coils seem to have fixed everything and it feels great again, really nice response and power. Not sure why everyone is so down on accel on here, I've been using their wires and coils on pushrod motors for awhile and have had no problems.
