Default 5.5 or 6.0?

I just changed out the oil in my car. The engine has 15,000 miles on it now, and I'm just wondering if I should have put 5.5 or 6.0 quarts of penzoil 5W-20 in. I mean, I've heard a lot of guys saying just dump in 6 bottles, but I just wanted to know what you guys thought. Why put 6 quarts in? Does the engine starve under extreme driving conditions?

You ask why put 6 quarts in??? Well... because if the manual says so then that's what you do lol. It doesn't vary from vehicle to vehicle when when comparing the same model of the same year.

But how is it that the engines of past would be alright with 5 quarts? My manual says 4.6 quarts lol

The "engines of the past" are not allright with 5.0 qts...

Also, the 2000 manual does NOT say 4.6 qts, it says 4.7 liters (5.0 qts)--download it here.

However, it was discovered in independent testing in 2001 that there could be oil starvation in prolonged high lateral g-force situations. Ford confirmed this and raised the recommend fill to 6.0 qts in 2002. The only change was the recommend capacity and the dipstick markings.

Download the 2002 manual and you will see the new spec.

It is recommended that 6.0 qts be used in all 4.6L Mustang engines, for cars manufactured prior to 2002 you can load 6 qts and re-mark the dipstick--or just get used to the new oil level...

-----------------------------------
All this said however, unless you are racing at Daytona, or routinely do long on-ramps at 120+ mph, it really doesn't matter...
