Transmission Noise
#11
Ha, I need someone around here! When it comes to the tranny I feel like it will be more work than I can do, not to mention even on jack stands there is no freaking room to get anything done.. Any idea how much it would cost to get a tob installed? I looked on ebay found one cheap along with a clutch, I would also just have a new clutch installed at the same time.

It would be nice to have someone around here to look at it. It's not something I can really do myself, any idea what it would cost? I found a SPEC stg 1 clutch kit for 250 shipped, and a centerforce TOB $40 sipped.

yeah, you should definitely just slap a clutch in while the tranny is dropped. Repair shops prices can fluctuate. If i had a good guess... I'd say... hmm.... 400 bucks maybe??? Idk, somewhere around there. Its not gonna be cheap, but it'll be cheaper than buying a new transmission. do a little more research to make sure it really is the throwout bearing, i dont want to be misleading you, as I have not had the chance to drive the car and stuff to really pinpoint the issue. but a tob is what it sounds like to me

I had a brand new throw out bearing installed when we put the trans in. It still makes that noise. I really have no clue what to do, but its getting annoying having that whine all the time.

Also I have the same problem you guys are talking about, I've got that winding sound coming from the clutch/tranny area. My uncle seems to think it's the syncros in the tranny, so we're going to change out the tranny oil. Otherwise, other possibility would be the TOB that we'll look at.

couldn't hurt man... I would definitely check it... but I wouldn't get my hopes up. I NEED TO DRIVE THE CAR. lol that would make things easier.

Just add until it starts flowing out the fill hole. That's when you know you have the right amount.

+1 on the throw out beaing
Definately sounds like the throw out bearing. When you engage the clutch petal you are applying pressure to the bearing which can quite the noise.....its between the clutch fork and the teeth of the pressure plate. With the clutch disengaged, there is no pressure on the TOB and it is free to whine. The TOB is a wear item within the clutch and it is not unusual for it to start whining at the end of it's life. I have had this happen to me several times on a few cars, most notably my 77 Trans Am and now on my 04 GT. I have MAC LT's so it's gonna be a major project doing my clutch. I have 103k on the clock and can definately notice some clutch slip.
