Default Fuel gauge working intermittently (Return Style system)

I have a 2000 Mustang Gt with built motor/turbo kit and a Return style fuel system which consists of a Glenn's performance FOX body sleeper tank (79-97) and an external fuel pump.

My problem is that my fuel gauge hardly ever works, its dead most of the time with the "low fuel" light on. when it DOES decide to work for a little while it usually pops up between the 1/2 and 3/8 mark and also when the tank is completely full.

What could this be? Just the fuel level sensor? Pinched wire?? (probably not since it works sometimes). I already have another level sensor for a foxbody eady to swap out but i dont know what exactly are the differences between the stock 99-04 fuel level sending unit and a foxbody (or 79-97) fuel level sensor/sending unit. From what i understand the 99-04 cars have the sensor in the fuel hat but im pretty sure my style tank doesnt have one (Im not sure cause a shop did the fuel system for me).

I would like to know before i go through the trouble of dropping the tank and figuring everything out.
