Motor Swap
Hellp,
Im new to the group. I am currently in possession of a 1997 mustang gt that I want to ditch the 4.6 in favor of the 5.0 from a 1994-1995 gt or cobra. My main reason is because of that motors reputation of making big power with minimal mods. My biggest concern is whether the motor mounts will match up. Any thoughts?

You have to use the K-member from a 94/95 GT or a V6 k-member to bolt a 5.slow into a 97. And don't go swapping a 5.0 in there just because of supposed 5.0 heritage. The 94/95 5.0 is probably the worse choice in stock form. There are better options than what your thinking

thats just your opinion on the 5.0. it would seem obvious that the 4.6 was garbage considering it only lasted 15 years. 5.0 has been around ALOT longer. No I am not keeping the motor stock. i prefer a roller cam to a OHC design. I only chose those two model years due to it being in a SN-95 body style and im only after the front drive accessory. but thanks for your opinion.

Sell your 97 and buy a 94-95. There is much more involved than you imagine. Ask me how I know....
And the fact that you think the 4.6 is garbage because it ONLY had a 15 year run baffles me... This isn't 1960 anymore. There is now what we call competition, which drives change.

A factory 4.6 aluminum teksid block which came in several lincolns and cobra is a stock block casting capable of 1000 horsepower, with an aftermarket set of rods, pistons, hardware, and even stock heads combined with a blower you can take the motor up around 800 horsepower and it be rather reliable. Moving on to a stock 5.0 casting, you cant even come close to that, even with a valley girdle and reinforcement gues what, around the 500hp your awsom 5.0 block with crack in half, so you need to buy an aftermarket block, aftermarket heads, and all the other parts you would also need to make a 4.6 make power, the only difference is i can do it on a stock block and heads and you can't. The big benefit of the pushrod motor is parts are cheaper and are cheaper to make power to a point, but it all depends what your doing, but saying a 4.6 is "garbage" is laughable. Stock for stock a 4.6 is far more reliable than a 5.0, and even the NPI 2v is the same power level as a stock 5.0.

The old 5.0L is a joke to mod compared to the newer motors. Shoot, the 3.8L V6 block can take more than the 5.0L block you are hoping to use.
Keep the 4.6L and modify to your power needs.
Also, you won't be street legal in the US after swapping an older model year motor into a newer car. Your insurance techinically won't be valid either due to the swap not being EPA legal.

Just because the 2011 and up 5.0's are making huge HP numbers with little mods is all due to the new technology they have not just because they are 5.0's. They have a higher CR ratio then the 94's had, the new 5.0's have variable cam timing. As well as a ton more of research and development then the 1994's. Just because the 1994 has 5.0 on the fenders doesnt make it fast. A 2000 stock 4.6 2v motor has more HP then the 94 5.0's

^ +10 to what everyone else has said.
Although I highly doubt this gentleman is going to read your replies and think to himself, "Well, looks like I was wrong, better keep this awesome 4.6l!"
Everyone get your flamesuits ready!

dude, i loved my 95, had a good amount of power with bolt ons, then when i had the 331 built it went like hell...
except for the fact that every time the tach swung over 6500 i started cringing and whatnot
my 96 saw 6500-7000 on a regular basis and with a $280 set of PI heads, $300 for used COMP 270's and springs, 5 minutes on the belt sander at work to clearance the intake valves, yada yada yada blah blah ill make ~320rwhp and be able to rip it day in and day out without worry
the only thing the 302's have going for them is (in theory) theyre easier to work on (proven, there is a LOT more room in there) and parts are cheaper (which is BS, find me a good, hell even GARBAGE set of aluminum 302 heads for $280...)
raised a pushrod boy, i miss my old car too but mod power is where its at!!!
