Thought this was cool:
1999 Mustang Overview The year 1999 marked the Mustang's 35th anniversary, and Ford reacted appropriately by freshening up the Mustang lineup. Most noticably, the new Mustang's bodywork was revised. The style was still based on the SN95 but now sported an edgier, more masculine look. The grill "corral" was re-introduced; the last Mustang to wear it was the 1973 model. Both the base and GT models wore "35th Anniversary" badges on the fenders.
The 35th Anniversary Limited Edition GT was added to the model lineup in 1999. This model sported a raised hood scoop, a black stripe running down the center of the hood, larger side scoops, a larger, unique spoiler, and a black honeycomb insert in the trunk lid. A new color, Performance Red, was made available only on the Limited Edition models.
The powertrain choices were significantly upgraded for 1999. The base model got a revised 3.8L V6 which now produced 193 horsepower at 5250 rpm and 225 ft-lbs of torque at 3000 rpm. The GT got an extensively upgraded SOHC 4.6L V8, with new heads, cams, and intake manifolds. The upgrades resulted in 260 horsepower at 5250 rpm and 302 ft-lbs of torque at 4000 rpm. The DOHC Cobra motor was advertised as having 320 horsepower at 6000 rpm and 317 ft-lbs of torque at 4750 rpm from the factory. In reality, however, the motor produced closer to 305 horsepower. Thus, Ford was forced to retrofit the Cobras with new intake manifolds, exhaust systems, and computer calibrations to make the advertised 320 horses.
2000 Mustang Overview No major changes were made to the Mustang lineup in 2000. The 35th Anniversary badges were obviously removed. The base V6 and GT models were indistinguishable from one another except from the rear, where the GT had a different bumper cover to accomodate the dual exhausts.
Ford introduced a new trim level called Spring Feature. It was available only on GTs, and included the colors Performance Red, Black, Silver, White, and Zinc Yellow. The Spring Feature package contained 17" x 8" performance wheels and tires, a body-colored hood scoop, body-colored side scoops, two black stripes on the hood, and black "Mustang" inserts on the embossed bumper. Ford produced 3,091 Spring Feature GT's.
Ford decided not to produce a Cobra model for 2000 because of problems with the 1999 Cobra. Ford did, however, produce something much more special: the 2000 Cobra R. This limited-edition Mustang was designed to be a street-legal race car. Its main attraction was a modified member of the Mod motor family: the DOHC 5.4L V8 which produced 385 horsepower and 385 ft-lbs of torque. This power was routed through a Tremec T-56 6-speed manual transmission. The Cobra R's handling was also upgraded to match the increased power output. It could pull in excess of 1.0g on the skidpad. The R also had unique bodywork, a front air dam, a unique functional rear wing, side exhaust, and racing seats. In an effort to keep the weight down, the R had no heater, air conditioning, rear seats, or sound deadening materials. The R was only available in Red, and only 300 were made.
2001 Mustang Overview The 2001 Mustang went largely unchanged from '99 and '00. The 2001 Mustangs got new headlights off the 2000 Cobra R. The GT model got the hood scoop and side scoops off the 35th Anniversary Limited Edition Mustangs, and a new wing was fitted to all Mustangs. Mustang GT's now came stock with 17 inch wheels, and the retro Torq-Thrust wheels were offered as an option.
A limited edition model called the Bullett GT was offered for 2001. This special edition was designed to mimic the styling cues of the 1968 Highland Green Fastback that Steve McQueen piloted in the movie "Bullett". The 2001 Bullett was offered in Black, True Blue, and of course Dark Highland Green. The green color was only available on the Bullett model. The Bullett lost the grill corral, got red brake calipers, sleeker side scoops, and a unique aluminum fuel-filler door. The interior of the Bullett continued the throwback theme, with old-school seats, 60's style gauges, and assorted silver interior trim. The Bullett also got a modest 5hp boost in power thanks to a new aluminum intake manifold. Only 5582 Bulletts were made.
Ford decided to bring back the Cobra for 2001, and it now came standard from the factory with the full 320 horsepower. The Cobra's bumper now said "Cobra" instead of "Mustang", and it used the same spoiler as the base and GT models. The Cobra also got a new interior.
2002 Mustang Overview The Mustang changed only modestly for 2002. The most important change to most people was the addition of the optional Mach 1000 audio system. This sound system was capable of producing over 1,100 watts of peak power. It included four 7.5" x 5.5" subwoofers, four tweeters, and two 10" trunk mounted acoustic suspension enclosures. The Mach 1000 also included a six-CD in-dash changer.
Other minor changes include a new color called Sonic Blue, different leather trim in the premium package, and an optional stripe on the base models. Wheels for the base Mustang were now a standard 16".
The Cobra disappeared for 2002, because the 2003 Cobra was due to arrive in dealer showrooms by June 2002. Ford actually made a small number of 2002 Cobras, but they were all destined for Australia. These Australian snakes were converted to right-hand drive, given side-marker lights, and given an additional set of fog lamps which were mounted inside the front bumper.
2003 Mustang Overview Ford made plenty of changes to the Mustang lineup in 2003. New colors called Dark Shadow Grey and Redfire were added to the options list to replace Mineral Grey and Laser Tint Red. The base model got the 1999 and 2001 Cobra hood. A new model called the Pony Edition was added to the lineup. It included the GT hood scoop, "Stampeding Pony" graphics, polished 16 inch wheels, and black inserts in the bumpers.
Ford also resurrected the venerable Mach 1 moniker for 2003. This limited-edition model had a number of unique enhancements. The Mach 1 got a new 4.6L DOHC V8 which produced 305 horsepower. This motor got air from a functional "Shaker" hood scoop. It also sported a flat black stripe that ran down the hood, black "Mach 1" side stripes, a black spoiler, and rolled exhaust tips. The seats were made from Comfort Weave like the originals. New Magnum 500 wheels were the only wheel offered on the Mach 1. A Mach could be had in Dark Shadow Grey, Torch Red, Black, Zinc Yellow, Oxford White, and Azure Blue, the latter of which was exclusive to the Mach 1. Ford celebrated its 100th Anniversary in June of 2003, and made limited edition F-Series Super Duty trucks, Explorers, Tauruses, Focuses, and Mustang GTs to commemorate the event. The 100th Anniversary models only came in black, and included Premium Verona-grain Imola leather seating surfaces in two-tone parchment, and the Mustang got the GT premium package which included 17" wheels, anti-lock brakes and traction control; dual exhaust; power driver's seat with power lumbar support; leather-wrapped steering wheel; and Mach 460 AM/FM Stereo with six-disc CD changer, as well as 100th Anniversary badges on the fender and decklid and embossed on the seats. The Centennial Package was a $995 upgrade. Ford made 717 coupes and 1,323 convertibles. The Cobra returned for 2003 with a vengeance. It now produced (an underrated) 390 horsepower from a supercharged 4.6L DOHC V8. Other changes include new front and rear bumpers, GT side scoops, and a new decklid spoiler. A new manual transmission, the 6-speed Tremec T56, was the only offering. This is the same transmission used in other high-performance cars such as the Z06 and Viper.
2004 Mustang Overview The Mustang underwent minor changes for 2004. 2004 was the Mustang's 40th anniversary, and as such, all models recieved a "40

Very helpful but missing some basic information.
2001 and upTransmission in manual models was switched from T-45 to a TR-3650 some believed this was a step backwards in reliability and power handling capabilites
2002 and upall models Received Smoked headlights
2003 (?)Rear Spoiler was a wing style vs older 'pinned on the edges style'
2003ish/2004 V6 model had a smooth hood with no faux hood intake.

"The 2001 Mustangs got new headlights off the 2000 Cobra R" this was refering to the smoked headlights

RE: Newedge History
Ok, so, my 04 is one of the 5700 anniversary package GT's (making my car almost as exclusive as the bullitt )... Is there any way I can tell which one of the 5700 it really is? And how about how many of those were black, and can I get a number for that, too? This info seems to be hard to find, and with only 5700 made, there has to be some sort of tracking out there.

Interested in hearing opinions on this, Id figure the 3650 was a more stout tranny. As for the '04 40th anniv. models only the crimson red which came spoilerless, had baige vinyl graphics and interior 40th anniv. badging, Bullitt trim ring, pedals are concidered true 40th anniv. models as far as I know and as far as I can tell.
