You guys are to much, I was actually freaking out when I made this thread! I was talking to Teej on the phone last night about it for about a half hour and I was really stressing about it! Do you guys think I can get by without draining my coolant for a week or two? I was hoping I can replace the hose and T-stat and then drain my coolant at my buddies garage...

@Matt (0949er) - hahaha Jersey shore is a pretty popular place up here to go to during the summer! Even more so now, that the show Jersey Shore has really taken off. They are filming season 3 right now so there have been A TON of people around here that have vacationed there last month and this month.

@Devo - I'd give my right ******** for that hot blonde (uberstangs grandma) to be my girl!

I got a much needed day off from work today so that I can fix it and look for a new job! Yessssssssss!!!!

Start with a stone cold engine.

You don't need to drain the coolant to change the t-stat, pack a bunch of absorbent rags/paper towels around the thermostat housing before you open it up (just remove the two bolts and tap the t-stat housing off with a plastic mallet, or tap a small screwdriver into the seam).

Although it is unlikely there is anything wrong with the thermostat, or that it is "clogged"--I've never seen a clogged thermostat in 50 years of turning wrenches. Also, the coolant flows from the block, through the t-stat, and into the top of the radiator; so even if the thermostat were clogged (which would be similar to "closed" anyway) it would not cause the upper hose to balloon.

That said, changing it won't hurt anything.

Changing out the hose you may or may not lose a bit more coolant, but be prepared to clean up a bit.

FWIW, here's the coolant flow path in our engines:
