The cologne v6 and the 4.6 are very durable and reliable motors. My buddy has a 00 GT with 200,120 miles on it just with regular maintenance. IMO, I would get the Gt for a 45 hp gain and just for the sound of the v8. Not to mention the torque and the price.

I work for a Ford shop and in all my years the i have only had to replace 1 4.6L. the motor is a tank as long as you take care of it. i have two mustangs with 4.6L in them and one has over 400k on it and i still run it at the track every weekend and then drive it to work on monday.

I had a 00 v6...I gave it away. It lasted me 250K miles til I gave it to my niece. It still runs, sadly.

Anyways, I got a 03 GT about a year and some change ago, and this car has been nothing short of fantastic. I was in the same boat as you, choosing between a New Edge and a S197. TBH, I'm not a fan of the 05-09 Mustang...it's looks are just plain, it feels like I'm driving a Taurus, and I dislike the "blingy" interior that still has as many plastic parts as a New Edge's interior. Also, the price difference steered me away. A S197 GT cost almost twice used as mine did. (I was looking at an 06 that cost 14K). But at the end of the day, me paying that much didn't make sense for me. Plus, a lot of "common" amenities in a 2006 car...weren't there. No ipod input, no steering wheel controls, lack of a trunk release button. The one thing the S197 has over us is the 3V engine, with tunes it responds to simple bolt-on's VERY well. Our 2v's are okay...but to get any real power, you need cams or a supercharger. Also, the ride quality is a bit smooth in a S197 than our platform, but tbh, the difference isn't terrible drastic.

But yeah, low mileage 2v's are out there everywhere going for cheap as hell. These engines last for a long time if you know how to take car of your engine, basic maintenance and you're good, these engines are pretty bulletproof. For 7-9K, you get 260hp/300tq. I think you'll enjoy it. I know I do.

Thanks Tightdogal! And yes, the New Edge models have always looked much better to me than the S197s. If I get the S197 I'm eventually replacing the body with a GT/CS or Roush to get the styling like I want it. But you're very right, as far as price goes the New Edge GT's are much better. Unfortunately looking through all the ads online (craigslist, ebay, cars.com) there's no New Edge GT's around my area that are somewhat low on miles. Since I have to do a dealer trade in it makes the selection tough.

I had no problem with mine except a battery replace at 60K miles, and believe me they were 60 HARD miles. The S197 V6s (excluding 2011) are BOATS, i would stay away.

Yeah, please don't get a S197v6. It's really no better than a v6 from our years. People will tell you "2 mods on a S197 v6 will make it faster than a New Edge GT" and that's certainly BS.

Unless those 2 mods include F/I or spray.

I love my GT. Only problem I've had was brakes, but that's not really anything to do with the car itself. I hope mine last to 150-200k miles. I'd definitely get a new edge over a s197.

i've had my 99 for over 5 years now and the one actual problem i had was the plastic intake manifold leaking on me, which i've replaced with an aluminum one. Other than that (knock on wood) it's been great. Oh and it's had over 400 whp for the last 4 years. And btw i'm pretty sure the new edge GTs have iron blocks

I thought the new edge GT's have an all-aluminum engine because of less weight compared to an iron block?

I'm still looking for a good deal on GT's, so far I can only find them $8k+ with over 100k miles. I'll keep looking though, hopefully something pops up after the winter season is over.
