Default Engine ID? wondering I my stang has the original engine

Where do you find the serial numbers on a 4.6 engine? When I had my trans rebuilt the shop said the engine looked like it came out of a junkyard (and the valve covers have some markings that look like what a salvage yard would use). How can I tell if this is the original engine or not?

Since the 1999-2000 GT came from the factory with a Windsor motor, if the current motor is a Romeo, then you will know it was swapped.
