Removing Air Pump

Removing Air Pump
Hey guys, I saw a couple threads pertaining to smog pumps but i just wanted to ask a couple questions. My air pump ceased up and stopped working so i removed my belt and i was told i can just remove the air pump. Has anyone done this that could give me a few pointers? I just wanna make sure I know what i'm doing once it's off (if i have to re-hook up hoses, etc). Also, does anyone know what the belt length is for a 87 5.0 w/o a/c and the air pump removed? thanks![8D]

RE: Removing Air Pump
I have just removed all the tube works fom behind my air pump, I capped off two vacuum lines that went to the works of it. I then unscrewed the component that comes off the air tube "Y" from the back or the heads. This component is on the passenger side near the firewall it has a hex area for disassembly and a crimped on stamp metal part that widens out and then comes together for a tube that hooks to the "works". I cut off the stamped metal part and welded the hex part shut,.. turning it into a cap.
So with one metal cap on the tube assembly coming from the heads and two vacuum lines capped off I have eliminated the air pump from the system. Fortunately for me the air pump has not seized and I still can run the stock belt. When I get the engine bored and stroked, and AFR heads (without holes in the back) I am going to invest in a smog pump eliminator,..solely to retain the stock belt size. These are only about 75.00 and I highly suggest it for simplicity sake.
I have not noticed any driveability problem bypassing this air pump,..just cap off the three items and your SET!!!!

RE: Removing Air Pump
when I removed mine on my 88, I left the tube line going behind the heads near the firewall and used one of the old rubber hoses from the air lines I removed to re-route the air from the tube back into the tube going down to the H-pipe. One of the old hoses is bent in a 180 degree bend that works perfect for this. This way I didn't have to cut or weld anything, and the scavageing suction of the exhaust keeps the air moving without the need of the pump. Just remember to remove and plug any unused vacuum lines that were connected to some of the junk you take off. Can't tell you what belt to use as I got rid of the power steering and AC too, sorry.
