Does your tensioner feel right on the idler pulley? Sounds like the belt could be loosening on the alt pulley at high RPM's. Don't know if that's normal or not cause I can't say mine heas ever been to 5800.

Also, when you changed your Alternator, did you change your belt. A stretched belt could do that too. With the alternator's location relative to the crankshaft and other load components, it will undergo more belt push and less belt pull in comparison to the other load components (except the smog pump which isn't that high of a load and won't give a warning of slippage).
