Default Timing Question

ok...i have a 302 with 351 heads...the guy i bought the car from retarded the timing alot...would there be any purpose what so ever for doing so? the heads are stock as far as i know...the only other mods are a 65mm tb and a k&n...i just want to get rid of the rediculous sound and get my power back...what all needs to be done to return timing to 0 or advanced 2? the car idles at 800rpm...any help would be greatly appreciated

stock 5.0 base timing is 10, your at 0? is that even possible?

The guy probably meant that he retarded the cam timing not ignition timing when he told you that.

im not sure what was adjusted...i know the timing light wouldnt even pick up the mark even when it was turned all the way down...the exhaust pops after shifting at high rpms and is really choopy at all engine speeds...im clueless of whether the cam timing or ignition timing might have been altered??? im clueless...i did notice that the #1 plug wire pole on the distributer is not pointing toward or near the #1 cylinder...lke i said, im clueless when i comes to timing
