Cam swap on 68 289
HI,
I am looking at doing a cam swap on my '68 mustang and had some questions. I have a 289 with the stock c4 and stock rear end. So far i have long tube headers and flowmaster exhaust, new intake and 4bbl 600 carb but other than that stock. I just the car as weekend driver, just something to have fun in and drive around. and want some more get up and go without breaking the bank.
I am looking to get the COMP Cams Camshaft Set High Energy 268H Hydraulic Flat Tappet 1500-5500 RPM 289/302 full kit so the cam, lifters springs and timing chain. My question is do i need anything else to do the swap or can i just basically do a 1 to 1 swap of all the included parts in the kit? Is there anything else that i am missing or overlooking? I might eventually get new heads but i don't have the budget for that right now.
Any advice would be great.
Tim

that cam will turn your car into a pig unless you have 3.23 gears or higher and a stall converter.
if your compression is less than 150, you are wasting your time.
if you want quicker acceleration, install a bigger engine or change the rear gears by at least 2 sizes.
if its an eddy carb and you are not a tuner and it needs jetting, you will likely never be able to tune it.
if the intake is bigger than an eddy performer non rpm, it will be a pig.
you need to curve your ignition timing to get optimum performance.

Would going with the High Energy 260H make the car less of a "pig"? I am not looking to do an engine swap as i like having the numbers matching. I will eventually get new gears but nothing larger than 3.23 as i do a decent amount of freeway driving, and that wont happen till probably next year. Any other cam's or other suggestions to get a little more get up and go out of her? I have the eddy Performer intake and a holley 600 cfm carb.
Thanks,
Tim
Thanks,
