Default oil coolers

what temp should oil be around? is it worth it to get an oil cooler? what about a tranny cooler

well depends...a oil cooler isn't really needed unless you do alot of idling like a taxi....the trans cooler is a must foran automatic a plate type cooler is best in dissipating heat

doesnt hurt to get one call around to junkyards and ask for the oil coolr setup from a 1987-1988 tbird turbo coupe its the same as a SSP mustang setup

well i dont do to much idleing and ive got a 5 speed tranny. so not worth it on either of them?

If you have an auto u probably have a tranny cooler....oil coolers are just another place for oil to leak

Oil temps should be around 220F to 250F.
You should stay out of the throttle until around 180F.

If your temps are going over 250F for a noticeable duration, then an oil cooler is advisable.
However, if the temps never get above 180F (or so), then you will start to lose hp and efficiency. Maybe not a noticeable amount, but there will be a loss.

Synthetic oils can handle much more temperature than dino oils. Syn. will also run a little cooler.
A better option may be to run a synthetic oil, versus getting a cooler.

I don't recommend installing an oil cooler until you have a decent temp gauge on the oil. This way you can tell if you need it, and if the cooler is working properly.
