1990 5.0l to 351W SWAP
Hey guys... well I just bought a pretty good condition 1990 Mustang GT with the 5.0l V8 it has 167000 miles on it so i figured I would do a complete rebuild from the interior to the engine, transmission, paint ect...
My idea is to take a 351W long block and then transfer all of the stuff from the 302 (5.0l) all the stuff I mean water pump, alt, oil pump, distributer, intake manifold, all the EFI, ect...
I am hung up on the transmission though... Do I need to keep it a AOD tranny or can i swap it out for a C4 or AODE? What all would I need to chenge if I swaped it for a C4 or AODE would it still be plug and play (With correct bellhousing)??
and just as a make sure type question...I CAN reuse all the "stuff " from the 302 on the 351W right?
I am looking for aorund 450rwhp and 450rwtq out of this car...and I should be able to easily get it... What yall think?? Thanks for the help, the quicker the reply the better so i can get on the phone and order this stuff!!!

RE: 1990 5.0l to 351W SWAP
You will need ..............
new intake
new oil pan with pick-up
accessorie brackets
flywheel
distributor
headers
oil pump
Swap is pretty straight forward and not very expensive
do a google search, tons of artcls that layout everything for you.

Not gonna get 450rwhp out of an N/A 351W ........... sorry.
I'm made about 350-360rwhp at 10.2 compression and AFR 185's

RE: 1990 5.0l to 351W SWAP
I used a 5 speed, so dont know jack shyt about automatics ....... sorry.
besides the engine it really doesnt cost much.
you need:
Ford Racing swap oil pan ...... $150
Ford Racing bracket for a/c ...... $60
Distributor ..................... $200
Headers ................... $200 you can find BBK longtube swap headers used all the time.
351 intake ............. $400-600
351 has 28oz balance so you need 28oz flywheel and balancer.
you need a crank pulley spacer also from Ford
Figure on spending an extra $1,000 at most for the swap parts.
and less if you do a internet searching for good used parts.
engine mounts in same place and wiring harness plugs right up.
swap is worth the trouble IMO
Engine cost ??????? how fast do you want to spend?

I found an engine from a reputable builder I think... 3600 to my door 475hp and 490ft lbs...
You have some place better or cheaper??
and the 351W intake.... is that something like this...

RE: 1990 5.0l to 351W SWAP
Dunno but if you are going to go to all the trouble, you might as well go ahead and get a better flowing aftermarket intake instead of using an old factory intake. You'll wanna swap it eventually, so you might as well get it now.

No, that intake will not feed 475hp
You will need a Trickflow R 5.8L intake or Edlebrock Super Victor EFI intake
I just put the edlebrock super vic on mine, very trick looking.
plan on having to spend about $600 or so for a good 351 EFI intake.

Cool! How much did you spend and where did you get your engine from? Thanks for the help so far man I appreciate it!
Should I upgrade to the 90mm MAF or stick with the 75mm?
And does anyone have a clue about the Transmission question?

RE: 1990 5.0l to 351W SWAP
I had mine built local by Ford race engine shop, cost about $4,500 for the long block with pan
and flywheel and balancer.
Remember engine needs to be balanced with the flywheel and balancer you
are going to use so make sure its done together when you buy it.
HIGHLY recommend you call around to some local "race engine" shops
before ordering off the internet. NOT a big fan of ordering engines off the net.
If something goes wrong you have very little recourse vs. someone you can
go talk to and god forbid take the engine back to.
yes 90mm MAF
