tap directly off the battery... a relay uses low amperage to run a high amperage circuit it can maintain heavier loads of current for extended periods of time where as switches unless rated for such cant without overheating

Tap off the battery. Sizing up the wire will also help maintain voltage on start- up as the inrush current is high. I don't know how many amps a 10, 8, or 6 ga. wire can handle. But bigger is better.

So I am actually better off to wiat for my dc fan controller, Finding a 75 amp relay is a pita. No auto parts store around me seems to have one big enough.
Autoparts store is your first mistake...

www.mcmaster.com
9672K36 is the part # you want for 70A continuous duty
$12.40/ea

Description:
Also called automotive relays, these relays can handle a high-inrush current of up to 120 amps, unless noted. Mechanical life is rated at 10 million cycles, unless noted. Relays without a mounting tab hole diameter listed in the table do not have a mounting tab.

Catalog page 865.. McMaster Carr FTW!

And yes... Put some beefy wire (10 or 8 awg) on the 30 and 87 pins on the relay.

Or Go by your local ciruit city and get a 40/60amp spdt relay for the high speed and a 30/40amp spdt relay for the low speed and wire it up like so....

Both 30's- 10 ga wire from battery
Both 85's- Ground
86 on low speed relay to red/green wire on your steering column from the key switch (This is an ignition wire)
86 on high speed relay to switch and the other side of the switch to the battery for a constant source
87 on low speed relay to the low speed wire on the fan (use 10 ga wire)
87 on high speed relay to the high speed wire on the fan (use 10 ga wire)

by doing this your fan will cut on with yourcar on low speedand high speed will come on when you flip the switch. Low speed pulls 37 amps and high speed pulls 52 amps.

You used a 15 amp fuse. It blew. So you put in a 30 amp fuse. Now it blew. Have you considered wrapping it in aluminum foil?
Thats the dumbest thing I have ever heard.

"well I blew a 15a fuse, so I put a30a in, then I blew that one so I wrapped it in foil and now my car is burned to the ground because I was stupid"

I am not trying to put FullAuto down in any way. I think he is full of good info and has exceptional deals on engine kits. I work as a car stereo installer and I see some f'ed up things people do to their cars every day. I see the Alum foil on the fuse box idea every other day. I am just saying in general that its a stupid thing to do, not saying that he (FullAuto) is stupid.
