Astro Performance T-5 opinions, 408 with 11:1 comp making power to 7200 rpm
Ok here is the question, I have the full astro performance T-5,1 through4 and the main shaft. The only stockinternalsin my T-5 is the 5th gear. I have a spool with4:10s in the rear.If you haverecomendations on gear ratios, let me have it (thinking i might wanna goa hair lower). The car is going to be a strip/street machine, comming outto the street for joy rides and the runs to car shows. My question is,banging gearsaside (which I will resist as much as possible) how much life can iexpect from this transmission? If anyone has anyexperiance with these guys goodor bad let me know. Engine specs are as follows:
1986 351w block bored .30 overstroked to 408(no access to 69-74 block)
Victor Jr heads 210cc intake ports70cc chambers making 11:1 compression 2.05 intake 1.60 exhaust valves
Victor Jr Intake port matched to heads
Holly 950cfm 4150 carb
Doug Herbert Solid Roller cam .644 .643 290/302 @ .50 RPM range 3500-7200
Crane Cams Solid Roller lifters
Hardend pushrods
Scorpion roller rockers
1.6 studs with stud girdles
Eagle Forged steel crank
Eagle H beam rods
SRP-5ccpistons
ARP studs and bolts in heads, mains, androds
Bottom end fully balanced by Eagle
Melling High Performance oil pump (not high volume)
Hooker Headers full length 1 3/4" into 3" collectors
Thanks in advance,
Bill

wow.
thats a pretty nasty motor.
given your description i'd say your probably right on the threshold of breaking the Astro.
From what i've read/heard, they aren't quite as powerful as they are advertised.
1 guy here grenaded one with a fairly stock 302.
i know they're not quite as fun, but you might want to consider an auto swap. they're a little more capable of holding high torque.

I would definitly consider a stronger tranny.... like the www.modularmustangracing.com MMR750 or MMR900

7200 with any syncronized transmission isn't going to work well. Astro's kit is syncronized.Syncronizershead south after 6500. I know there will be someone on here that saysI shift my car at 7500 or something with syncronizers but I bet they aren't powershifting and they miss a lot of gears. If you already have a blowproof and a shifter and just want to keep aT5 then I would look into G Force dog ring engagment gear kits. They also offer upgraded cases andoutput shafts.Thereare no sycronizers and it is much easier to power shift at higher rpms. If overdive isn't in the picture look into a Jerico or G Force clutch assisted gear boxes. You can street dive themand they will take around 1400 horsepower.

A G-Force T5 or a Proshifted Libery will take 600-700 rwhp on street tires all day long and never break. Now throw some big slicks on the back and dump the clutch at 7000rpm and your playing with fire. If the car will see track use often then I suggest the G-Force/Jerico 4-speed, or the G-Force(Nascar style 4A)or the standard T-101. They are a fully dogring/ straight-cut set-up that will handle around 700-900rwhp depending on the tire size. I would not suggest the "Clutch assisted" G-Force or Libery 5-spd. for street use. One because their $5000-6000.00 and two they cost an arm & leg to fix them when they break. When you pull out in 1st gear with them, you have to keep a constant load on the gears or else it will pop out, Just like a LENCO tranny. You can hold the tranny in gear when you let off the gas or you will break the dogs off the gear. You can't downshift them either. You have to come to a complete stop and put it back in first and start over again.
Just go with a G-Force T5 with the straight-cut/ dogring gears, or a Pro-shifted liberty. Theyshift fairly easy on the street and can handle alot of horsepower on the "street". The G-Force straight- cut gear set-up is a little noisy so I wouldn't recommend using it as a daily driver.
I have the G-Force T5 in my car. I used it all last year at the track with 576rwhp/621 rwtq dumping the clutch at 7000rpms it still holding up !
Call G-Force Transmissions and ask for Mike Long. I'm sure he can hook you up with the tranny you need.

Clutchless tranmissions are the ones you have to keep constant pressure on. Clutch assisted are the ones used for street driving and are much cheaper. I agree a G Force T5 is all he will need but if he's got money to spend go with a Jerico or a G Force, you won't regret it!
